Major Rules on Positioning of Key Phrases in Web Site

By Irmin J. Roybal

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an important part in development of successful web site. In this brief article I am going to summarize all major rules on positioning of keywords in your website. Other important issues, such as, for example, site indexing or major mistakes which webmasters do in effort to get better rate, I have described elsewhere. Before I will list these rules, I would like to make just one general and very important note: Never rely on SEO alone, your site traffic will be on a mercy of web robots, and robots have no mercy.

Key rule of keyword placement: the closer key phrase or keyword to the header of the page, the higher it will be rated by the crawler.

On formatting: Accented words are getting higher rating by web crawlers, so this will help:

- use key phrases in headings (especially those marked with h1 and h2 tags);

- use bold font on key phrases, of course, do not overdo that, 2-3 times and in right places would be enough;

- use italics (same comment).

Title: page title is the highest rated text, so key word or better key phrase in the title is a must! Of course, making just a list of keyword is not a good idea, title still should be attractive, original and reasonably brief. Brief because crawlers are not looking further than first 50 " 80 characters.

Description: Site description is a meta-tag which does not influence the site rate directly. However, this is what the engine will show in search results, so you better make it catchy and informative, otherwise your link might be just skipped by the user.

Linked text: Keywords and key phrases used within linked text (internal and external alike) will give some little extra weight to the site. However, this must be done with a reasonable moderation. Visitor might be irritated by a too lengthy links and leave.

The pages: of your site should carry a specific key phrase each. It maybe more than just one, 1 or 2 related phrases, but not 5 or 10, this will be inefficient. Overall, the more pages of a relevant content the site has, the higher rank it should get. Also, the more frequent addition of new pages, the faster is indexing and its ranking. Above all other pages, index page is the most important one, because it has highest chances of being listed among top search results. Therefore, a selection and placement of keywords in index page is an issue of highest importance.
